Counselling for Depression

Programme Leader: Lorraine Munro

This course offers professional development for counsellors who are already trained in Person-Centred or Humanistic approaches and who have significant clinical experience (at least two years post qualification). CfD training intends to build on participants existing knowledge and support them to align their practice with the competence framework which is derived from the research evidence for beneficial outcome.

CfD training will provide dedicated input on working briefly, evaluating risk of suicide and self-harm, working relationally with client self-report outcome measures, working informed by a competence framework and working with emotional processes.

Announcement - Name Change

Counselling for Depression (CfD) is being re-named, Person-Centred Experiential Counselling for Depression (PCE-CfD). The name change has been made to ensure there is clarity and consistency. PCE-CfD is clearly identifiable amongst other psychological therapies offered within an Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) service.

Counselling for Depression (CfD)

PCE-CfD is an innovative development in counselling and psychotherapy. It is one of the four, NICE approved, evidence-based additional modalities, licensed to be provided within NHS mental health services. PCE-CfD targets the emotional problems underlying depression along with the intrapersonal processes, such as low self-esteem and excessive self-criticism, which often maintain depressed mood. PCE-CfD therapy aims to help clients contact underlying feelings, make sense of them and reflect on the new meanings which emerge. This, in turn, provides the basis for psychological and behavioural change.

Course Description

This qualification is recognised by the NHS and enhances career prospects for qualified therapists. PCE-CfD training enables therapists to understand the requirements of working within an NHS environment. It deepens understanding of the connection between research, theory and practice and focuses on person-centred practice that engages with emotional processing which has been shown to be effective with clients who are depressed.

Metanoia Institute is the BACP approved provider of CfD training for the southern region of the UK.

At Metanoia we are creating a community network of PCE-CfD therapists. We host a range of refresher days for delegates as well as support for PCE-CfD supervisors.
