Metanoia Research REF Results

Metanoia Institute is proud to announce the results of our very first Research Excellence Framework (REF) submission.

Our results indicate an emerging international research significance, with over 50% of our research output and impact at a quality recognised internationally in terms of originality, significance and rigour.

As a small HEI and charity with a growing impact and influence in the sector, Metanoia has travelled a significant distance on the journey towards recognition for producing internationally excellent research.

Dr Biljana van Rijin:
“Making our first REF submission is a significant landmark for Metanoia Institute. We have taken the step of comparing ourselves to universities with long established research capability and resources, and we have demonstrated that our emerging research has both national and international significance in our field. This is just a first step, as we continue with our mission of providing high quality psychotherapy and counselling education and research”

REF 2021 is the only the second time UK Universities have been asked to submit their research under this framework, with the inaugural REF completed in 2014.

Professor Carrie Weston:
“Our first REF submission recognises the institute as an organisation with international research significance and we wish to take this opportunity to thank our research and support staff for achieving this landmark result. Our research will continue to grow and support the learning, development and enquiry of our students.”

REF 2021 is undertaken by the four UK higher education funding bodies: Research England, the Scottish Funding Council (SFC), the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW), and the Department for the Economy, Northern Ireland (DfE). This is first time Metanoia Institute has participated as we continue our journey towards an organisation with its own degree awarding powers.
