Interrupting and Withdrawing from Study

An ‘interruption to studies’ allows you to take an authorised break in your studies for a maximum of one calendar year in the first instance. In most instances this will be an interruption that you have chosen (voluntary) but occasionally it may be enforced by Metanoia Institute (suspension).

VOLUNTARY INTERRUPTION - Most commonly, voluntary interruption will occur at the end of one academic year, before restarting the next, and will arise out of personal life-commitments which lead you to seek a break between training years. If you wish to interrupt your studies in this way, you should talk to your Primary Tutor and/or Programme Leader and discuss your reasons.

If you take a ‘voluntary interruption to studies’, providing you have informed us in writing that you do not wish to continue onto the next year via the ‘application to continue training’ form, you will not have to pay course fees for that year. You will, however, be liable for an interruption of studies fee of £200, which covers your Metanoia membership for the year, use of library facilities and your re-entry interview.

If you are not able to return to your studies after a break of more than two years, you will be deemed to have ‘withdrawn’ from the course and your student status with Middlesex and Metanoia will be terminated. Should you then wish to return to your studies at some point in the future, you will need to reapply to join the programme by filling in and submitting a full application. Your application will be considered in terms of whether you can re-join the programme and, if so, into what year, via the Accreditation of Prior Learning (APEL) route (details available from your Academic Coordinator). Please note that if you have passed the maximum registration period for your course, you are likely to have timed-out for the degree and so would only be able to reapply to join the diploma-only route.

SUSPENSION FROM TRAINING AND/OR PRACTICE - On rare occasions, students may be suspended from training and/or practice. This decision will not be taken lightly but instances in which students may be suspended could include: assessments outstanding; assessment by the tutor that a student is not personally ready to continue training/practice; failure to abide by course regulations; failure to abide by Codes of Ethics and Procedures; formal complaints.

Students on suspension from training who feel that they have fulfilled any conditions or actions that have been prescribed, should contact the Programme Leader. They should provide a clear rationale for why they wish to return, and details of how they have met the requirements that were set. The Programme Leader will then hold a re-entry interview with the student to discuss their application and whether they feel they have now fulfilled the requirements. Subject to space, the Programme Leader may then offer the student a place back on the course. During each year of suspension, students will need to maintain their membership of Metanoia Institute. This costs £200 per year, which also covers payment for the re-entry interview.

WITHDRAWAL FROM STUDIES

If you are thinking about leaving the Metanoia Institute and not returning, please speak to your Primary Tutor and/or Programme Leader to discuss your reasons. There may be other options, such as additional help (perhaps advice on how to improve your academic skills), a temporary interruption of studies, or transfer to another programme. Please fill in a ‘withdrawal from studies form’ if you decide to go ahead (this can be within your faculty Moodle page).

Please note that an application to Interrupt or Withdraw from your studies that is entirely retrospective (ie once you have started the academic year and/or signed and returned your contract), will not be considered or approved and the course fee will still be due.
